LAHORE, Jan 27: District Coordination Officer Mian Ijaz ordered on Saturday complete suspension of cable transmissions till Muharram 13 and ejection of elements occupying the properties of imambargahs and mosques.

The DCO issued the orders during meetings with delegations of Shia and Sunni ulema here.

He said cable operators had been directed to suspend their transmissions immediately. Restrictions imposed on publication and circulation of provocative literature would continue and stern action would be taken against those trying to disturb the law and order situation.

He said no change would be allowed in the venues of the majalis-i-aza and approved routes of the Zuljinnah processions, he added.

He said garbage and encroachments would be removed from the areas around the venues of majalis in Islampura, Iqbal Town, Bibi Pakdaman, Kot Lakhpat and Township.

The ulema assured the DCO that Ashura would be peaceful as there was complete sectarian harmony.

Rule of law: Speakers at a lawyer’s convention on Saturday observed that an alliance of army, feudal and judiciary had damaged the country.

Titled “Challenges faced by the country and solutions and fair and free elections,” the all Pakistan lawyers’ convention was organised by the Lahore High Court Bar Association.

Former LHC bar president Fakharunnisa Khokhar said that there was a dire need to get rid of the military regime because Pakistan was not created for military rule. She said that this was the right time to get rid of the Doctrine of Necessity.

Former LHC bar president Ahmad Awais said the rule of law was required to be implemented in true spirit to save the country. He regretted that people of Pakistan had not been enjoying a democratic setup in a country, which was brought into being without firing a single shot.
