Spinner Atif triggers LS collapse

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Jan 25: Despite dogged batting by Junaid Zia and Usman Malik, Lahore Shalimar found themselves in trouble against Karachi Harbour on the second day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Gold League match at the Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday.

Replying to Karachi Harbour’s 319, Lahore Shalimar were dismissed for 179 to concede a lead of 140 on the first innings. The visitors stretched their lead to 158 by closing at 18 for no loss in the second innings.

Junaid (34) and Usman (15 not out) added 37 vital runs after the hosts were in danger of follow-on when the sixth wicket fell at 129.

Skipper Salman Butt (47, nine fours) and Aamir Sajjad (44, 10 fours) had earlier put on 53 for the third wicket before Salman was run out by Fawwad Alam.

Off-spinner Atif Maqbool then caused a batting slide, sending back Aamir, Arsalan Mir and Humayun Farhat in quick successions. Atif eventually finished with excellent figures of five for 63 in 20.4 overs.

Earlier, Karachi Harbour themselves suffered some sort of collapse as they lost the last five wickets for 35 runs after starting ay 282 for five.

Fahad Iqbal failed to add to his overnight score of 71 while Sarfraz Ahmed departed for a top-score of 75. Junaid excelled with his medium-pacers to claim four for 82. Left-arm pacemen Mohammad Khalil and Jamshed Ahmed took three wickets apiece.
