CHITRAL, Jan 25: The generation capacity of Wapda hydel power station in Chitral can be enhanced to 5MW from the existing 1MW to overcome frequent snapping from the national grid at the Lowari Pass.
Officials told Dawn that the power station was commissioned in 1976 and its upgradation had been pending since long. The station is fed by the Lotkoh river through a 2km-long channel.
“The generation capacity can be enhanced to 5MW if new turbines replace the existing two obsolete ones,” they said, adding that there were many turbines lying idle in power stations of Warsak and Tarbela.
A source said the generation capacity could be further enhanced to 15MW by widening the channel.
The people of the district face numerous difficulties, especially during the winter season because of frequent power disruptions. The people endure almost a week-long blackout once the power supply gets disconnected from the national grid.
