KARACHI, Jan 24: Fine bowling by Sialkot’s Tahir Mughal triggered a Peshawar collapse on the first day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Gold League match at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar on Wednesday.
Medium-pacer Tahir claimed five for 56 in 16.2 overs as Peshawar capitulated for 200 in their first innings after Imran Nazir won the toss and opted to put the hosts in.
Openers Mohammad Fayyaz (22) and Aftab Khan (41, five fours) shared a partnership of 40 before left-arm medium-pacer Sarfraz Ahmed sent back Fayyaz.
Aftab and Riffatullah Mohmand (25) then put on 52 for the second wicket before Tahir struck twice in quick successions. After that Peshawar’s subsided as apart from Janisar Khan (37, seven fours), no one else managed to make much contribution.
The last eight wickets fell for the addition of only 108 runs. And despite being costly, Asim Butt provided excellent support to Tahir by taking three for 61 in 13 overs. Sialkot, the current champions, ended an eventful day on 17 for no wicket.
