Naval chief gets US award

ISLAMABAD, Jan 24: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Mohammad Afzal Tahir has been honoured with US “Legion of Merit” award in recognition of his efforts to promote bilateral cooperation in the regional maritime and security affairs and the firm resolve towards global war on terrorism.

According to a press release issued here on Wednesday, the award has been conferred by American President George W. Bush and presented to Admiral M. Afzal Tahir by US Navy CNO Admiral Michael G. Mullen at a ceremony held in Washington.

Speaking on the occasion, the naval chief expressed his gratitude to the US government for recognising the efforts of Pakistan Navy.

He said Pakistan Navy was the only maritime force from the region participating in the Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan and also had the honour of commanding Task Force-150.

In his remarks, Admiral Mullen extended his felicitation to Admiral Tahir and lauded his role in further strengthening the relations between Pakistan and US navies.
