Razing of mosques condemned

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Jan 24: Melody Chowk was the scene of an angry demonstration on Wednesday, as hundreds of activists representing various religious groups and religio-political parties condemned the razing of the two mosques that were declared unauthorized by the Capital Development Authority (CDA). Madressah students outnumbered the participants of the demonstration.

Mounting small trucks and perched on trees, the protestors chanted slogans criticizing the demolition of mosques and madressahs. The flow of traffic remained obstructed for about an hour causing immense inconvenience to the motorists and the passers-by.

“Madressahs and mosques never came in the way of VVIP routes or posed a security threat. It’s the failed government policies that created a hostile environment and a sense of insecurity in the country,” said MNA Mian Aslam while addressing the protestors. Instead of building more mosques, the government was destroying places of worship, he charged.

The speakers threatened to “pay the government in its own coin” if more mosques or madressahs were demolished. Throwing a challenge to the government, they said the two razed mosques would be reconstructed soon.

Several young protestors said that demolition of mosques was a sin that would win the rulers the wrath of the Almighty. They asked the government to tune in to the nation and stop its policy of what they called pleasing the US by demolishing mosques and madressahs.
