KARACHI, Jan 24: Federal Minister for Political Affairs Amir Muqam has said that the NWFP government has no right to change the name of the province to Pukhtoonkhwa, as it requires an amendment in the Constitution.

The federal minister, who is also the ruling Pakistan Muslim League NWFP chapter’s president, said this while talking to newsmen at the residence of PML-Functional leader Imtiaz Shaikh here on Wednesday.

He said NWFP Chief Minister Akram Durrani to gain cheap publicity was giving statements that his government would rename the province.

“The name of the province could not be changed without amending the Constitution with the two-third majority,” he added.

He, however, agreed that the NWFP was not a good name for a province but maintained that neither an individual nor even the provincial assembly could change its name without the consent of the people of the province.

Regarding Kalabagh Dam, he said some people in the NWFP were opposing its construction but majority of people in the province was in its favour.

He also said Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz would inaugurate the construction work of Munda Dam in the next couple of months.

Earlier, Amir Muqam and Imtiaz Shaikh discussed overall political situation in the country.
