KARACHI: Sher Afghan’s remarks irk minister

KARACHI, Jan 24: Sindh Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Manzoor Hussain Panhwar has said that the remarks by Federal Minister Dr Sher Afghan Niazi on Kalabagh Dam will do no good to the government, adding that talking about construction of the dam and its canals at this stage will only result in confusion and complications. He noted that a consensus of all provinces on the project could not be evolved so far.

Sardar Panhwar, who is also President of the PPP-Patriot, was talking to a group of journalists in his office here on Wednesday. He said that Dr Niazi had made the statement at an inappropriate time, especially when in Sindh where people had apprehensions and reservations over this dam, as well as any other reservoir to be built on River Indus because of the non-implementation of the 1991 water accord in its true spirit.

He observed that President Musharraf’s policies were successful in restoring people’s confidence in the government because of the massive development in every sector. He said the construction of Bhasha Dam and its positive impact on the national economy would give further boost to the government’s image.— Staff Reporter
