Opposition to thwart re-election bid: Fazl

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Jan 22: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Monday that the entire opposition will unite to thwart efforts made for re-electing President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

Talking to reporters at his parliament house chamber after holding a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Satya Brata Pal, he said that the issue was not the re-election of a president by the existing assemblies, but it was his election in uniform.

The Maulana, who is also the secretary-general of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), said the issue of re-electing a president in uniform alone could help opposition parties to unite and foil the attempt.

Replying a query, he said the option of resigning from parliament was not over and would be used at an appropriate time.

About the multi-party conference in London, he asked the PPP not to make it an issue of ego and participate in it in the presence of MMA leaders.
