KARACHI, Jan 22: Citizens continued to suffer due to suspension of power supply to almost all areas of the city on Monday under the KESC’s load-shedding programme which entered its fifth day.

A source in the KESC said that three of the four units at the Korangi Thermal Power Stations had gone out of order while two units at the Bin Qasim Power Station were already closed for maintenance purpose.

Consumers in various localities pointed out that changing weather conditions were creating extra demand for power and if appropriate measures were not taken by the KESC at this stage, the situation in the upcoming summer would be worse than what it had been in the previous season.

A KESC spokesman stated that power demand, at present, stood at 1,400-1,700 MW as against 1,200-1,300 MW in January last year. He said that the demand might increase up to 2,350 MW in summer and in order to meet it, the KESC had started taking measures for enhancing the power generation capacity and strengthening the distribution system. He said that the target for power generation had been set at 2,500 MW.

He said that the work on the Bin Qasim unit would be completed by January 28.
