Girls, teachers asked to wear head-to-toe burqa

By Munawar Afridi

DARRA ADAMKHEL, Jan 21: The political administration of Darra Adamkhel in the Frontier Region of Kohat, has directed female teachers and girl students of government schools to wear white burqa (an all-enclosing cloak) on their way to and from schools.

Political Tehsildar for FR Kohat Abdul Ghafoor issued the directives during a meeting with head teachers of the girls’ schools on Saturday, official sources said. He said female teachers should replace their “fashionable black” burqa with the traditional white burqa.

The meeting was convened to assess the security situation and to work out a policy in the wake of bomb blasts near girls' schools and pamphlets threatening women teachers and students with dire consequences.

The head teachers were directed to ensure that all teachers and girls from primary to high school wore white burqa. The watchmen were also directed to ensure their presence in schools round the clock, the sources said.

They regretted that on one hand the centre had announced a coeducation policy in girls’ schools, while on the other the political administration had made burqa compulsory.
