PESHAWAR: Nadra gets lukewarm response: CNICs in Fata

PESHAWAR, Jan 19: The National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) is receiving a lukewarm response in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), as people in the region’s remote parts are reluctant to obtain computerised national identity cards for their womenfolk.
Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Nadra chairman Saleem Ahmad Moeen said that despite the provision of adequate facilities only 140,000 women had obtained national identity cards in the tribal areas. He said the authority had distributed a total of 840,000 identity cards in Fata.
“There is a lack of awareness and motivation among the people of this remote region, who are unwilling to bring their women to registration centres,” he remarked.
He said the Nadra was facing the same problems in the rural areas of the NWFP. He said that in the NWFP a total of 7,100,000 people had been provided identity cards and at present only 100 to 120 women were getting cards daily.
Mr Saleem said that Nadra’s 77 units, including mobile ones, were operational in 24 districts of the Frontier province to facilitate the people. He said the authority had a capacity to prepare up to 100,000 identity cards daily, but presently only 18,000 to 20,000 cards were being prepared across the country.Regarding the registration of the Afghan nationals, the Nadra chairman said that so far 1.6 million Afghans had been provided the Proof of the Registration (PoR) cards and in the NWFP over one million Afghans had been registered. He said that Nadra had set up 160 registration centres in the country for Afghan nationals.
JUDICIAL CUSTODY: The man who allegedly killed his three sisters and mother was sent to judicial lock-up after he refused to confess to his crimes before a local court here on Friday.
The accused, Haleem Shah, was arrested three days ago after his pre-arrest bail was dismissed by an additional district and sessions judge. He had been absconding for about four months.
The local police had produced him before the judicial magistrate after completion of his two-day police custody.
The accused had allegedly killed his mother, Ms Pukhraj, and three sisters Sabahun Nisa, Zaibun Nisa and Farzana in Sethi Town on Aug 21. After killing them he allegedly covered them in shrouds and dug up four graves in his ancestral village. When he was burying the bodies, the officials of the Pabbi police station had come to know about his activities.
The accused had allegedly escaped and the police had taken the bodies into custody. Later, the bodies were handed over to the Chamkani police station officials. An FIR was registered against Haleem Shah by his brother Syed Kaleem Shah.
Police believed that the two brothers had apparently entered into an agreement after which Haleem Shah had appeared before the court. He added that although he had killed the four women, he was refusing to plead guilty, adding that circumstantial evidence was against Haleem Shah.
