Ex-police chief gets bail

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 18: Additional Inspector-General Tariq Jamil, who was relieved as the capital city police officer of Karachi and asked to report to the establishment division on Tuesday, was granted interim bail before arrest in the sum of Rs500,000 by a division bench of the Sindh High Court on Thursday.

Advocates Rasheed A. Razvi and Amer Raza Naqvi submitted on behalf of the police officer that he was being investigated by the National Accountability Bureau for having acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

They said his house had been raided by NAB personnel on Wednesday and he apprehended arrest without the due process of law. Whatever assets he possessed, they said, were either inherited or acquired through lawful means.

The bench, which consisted of Justice Rehmat Hussain Jaffri and Justice Munib Ahmed Khan, issued a notice to the NAB for Jan 24 and entitled the applicant to bail in the meantime.

RANA MAQBOOL CASE: The SHC issued a bailable warrant for arrest of former police inspector-general Rana Maqbool Ahmed Khan to ensure his presence at contempt proceedings.
