KARACHI, Jan 18: Public fancy five-year-old bay mare Makina galloped to two-and-a-half lengths victory over King Of Sanghar to claim feature event in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Thursday.

Runners up to filly Abhi Abhi in the ‘Horse of the Year’ cup in her last appearance, she made amends to the loss by finishing ahead of five other contenders in the shortest field.

The triumph enabled jockey Shahid Manan to establish his credentials as he didn’t allow Shahid Rehman to make a breakthrough. Rehman, a seasoned rider, specially came from Lahore to ride King Of Sanghar.

Owned by M. R. Hussain, she was saddled by trainer M. Pervaiz.

Finishing five lengths behind was bay mare Voo Doo Doll and further three-and-a-quarter lengths away was mare Fantasia.

On the whole, the day belonged to punters as barring an exception, seven favourites and two joint favourites returned triumphant in a card of 10 races.

Following three dismal runs in a row, four-year-old bay colt Shah Sawar posted a facile five lengths victory over chestnut Flying Prince to lift Golden Stakes Cup in div V-B of class VII. He was ridden home by Mujahid Ali.

Similarly, seven-year-old King Of The Ring with Fahim K aboard, atoned to the previous loss by returning with flying colours to capture the Golden Stakes Cup in div V-A of class VII. He beat Lucky View by half length.

Trainer Mansoor Alam had done a good job by sending a brace of winners.

Two women owners also met with success in the men dominated equine sport.

Rider M. Yousuf presented owner Zubaida Rehmat with a winner by piloting odds on favourite mare Sonu Love Mani to a convincing seven lengths victory. She had lost a closely fought battle to Tharkyee last Sunday.

Zainab Ali’s mare Mixed Blessing with M. Manzoor astride, outpaced mare Taneez by two lengths to win honours.

As predicted, fancied Tharkyee from the stables of Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara lived up to the top billing when he registered five-and-a-half lengths victory to complete hat-trick.

Jockey M. Nasir who recently won ‘Rider of the Year’ 2006 award also proved his mettle when he came out with a splendid double. His winners were Awan and Birj-ul-Arab who made it two-in-a-row.

Predictions about Daruwala and Fair Boy also came true when they won their respective races.

According to KRC announcement, the next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Feb 3.
