SANGHAR: 15,000 wheat bags damaged

Published January 19, 2007

SANGHAR, Jan 18: About 15,000 wheat bags worth more than Rs20 million have been spoiled at Khipro godown due to negligence of the food department officials. Deputy District Officer (revenue), Shahid Abdul Salam Khan, inspected the godown on Thursday, checked grain storage and found that 15,000 out of 45,000 bags of wheat had been ruined in rains.

Obviously, the stock had been kept in open and no protective measure had been adopted to save it from rain.

No official was present during the DDO’s visit to the godown. However, some labourers were busy mixing spoiled wheat into good quality wheat.

The labourers told the official that most of the damaged wheat was used in the preparation of poultry feed.

The DDO said that the spoiled wheat was not fit for human consumption and even if animals consumed the grain, it would be harmful for them.

The DDO took the samples of damaged wheat and sent the sealed samples to the higher authorities. Further action is awaited.
