KARACHI, Jan 18: Khan Hussain Zia, in his lecture at the department of international relations, University of Karachi, on Thursday brought into the limelight the facts that usually had been brushed under the carpet.
Mr Zia, a former deputy chief of the Naval Staff and author of a book, was invited by the department to deliver a lecture on "Post-9/11 World and the Situation in Iraq”.
He categorised in his speech the western world into a group that basically serves one purpose that was its personal gain. He further insisted that the west that previously had joined hands with the Muslim world to rid the world of socialism had parted ways as soon as its aims were achieved.
Mr Zia said the corporate culture had pervaded in society to an extent that the multinational companies held no less important a position than that of state. To substantiate his statement, he said that Switzerland's company Nestle had an annual profit which was more than that of the annual GDP of Ghana, while Unilever's revenue was one-third more than that of Mozambique's annual income. He said that the corporate and capitalist system had been thirsting from the very beginning for resources.
Khan Hussain Zia also observed that there was no such thing as peace possible in the future as the countries that had power would continue to create havoc in the name of clashes of civilisations, religions etc.
The writer-cum-historian also stressed the fact that the United States seemed somewhat like the centre of universe for the western galaxy. He said the US was creating an atmosphere of fear just to grab the resources of the world and it had been successful in doing so by using its most effective tool – the media.
The focus of his discussion then shifted to the Muslim world in general and Iraq in particular. He alleged that the US had been using the World Trade Organisation, the International Monetary Fund and the Wrold Bank to keep a check on the countries rich in resources.
About Iraq, Mr Zia said it was the only country in the Islamic world that had 100% literacy rate and the highest number of the PhDs in the entire Muslim world.
