Iftikhar shines in Polo Cup

LAHORE, Jan 17: A last-gasp goal by Iftikhar Ali Khan helped Al Khan/Diamond Paints beat Punjab Police 8-7 1/2 in the BoP Polo Cup here on Wednesday.

The losers led the first chukker (3/ 1/2-2) due to 3/1/2 goal handicap. Dhruvpal Godara, who scored four in the match, struck first for the winners on a field attempt while Chris Hyde scored one, converting a 30-yard penalty hit.

In the second chukker, Godara, an Indian, put the winners ahead (5- 3 1/2) with a hat trick. He scored all through field attempts.

Punjab Police struck back in the third chukker and took a 6 1/2-6 lead by scoring three goals while conceding one.

Haseeb Minhas scored back-to-back field goals while Omar Minhas one, cashing in on a spot penalty hit. For the winners Hyde scored his second.

In the fourth chukker, Omar banged home his third goal to increase Police's lead to 7 1/2-6. But Shoaib Ahmad reduced the margin (7 1/2-7) converting a spot penalty near the goalpost, before Iftikhar struck the match-winner on a field attempt.

In another match, three goals each by James Harper and Taimur Mawaz Khan enabled Dubai Islamic Bank earned a facile 9-4 1/2 win against Lindt Chocolate. Ganzalo Bodia (2) and Kashif Jamal (1) were the other scorers.

For the losers, who have half goal handicap, Gerardo Mazini (2), Hamid Ali Manan (1) and Naved M Sheikh (1) reduced the margin.
