‘ISI protecting Omar’

Published January 18, 2007

KABUL, Jan 17: Afghanistan's intelligence authority released a video on Wednesday in which a man, claiming himself to be a Taliban spokesman, confesses to his role in the movement and alleges that its fugitive leader Mulla Omar is hiding in Pakistan under the protection of ISI.

Intelligence agents arrested Abul Haq Haqiq, known to the media as Doctor Mohammad Hanif, in the eastern province of Nangarhar late on Monday.

The video distributed to the media shows the 26-year-old alleging that he was picked up on entering Afghanistan from Pakistan on a ‘mission’, which was not specified.

Asked by an unseen interrogator as to the whereabouts of Mulla Mohammad Omar, the calm-looking and soft-spoken man says: “He is under the protection of the ISI in Quetta.”—AFP
