MUZAFFARGARH, Jan 15: Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Syed Aun Rizvi will conduct the trail of a ‘blasphemy’ accused in the Multan Central Jail today (Tuesday).

The trail of Abdul Rehman, alias Maani, will be held in the jail because of security reasons. Earlier, a co-accused in the case, Abdul Sattar Gopang, was stabbed to death on June 16, 2006, on the premises of the district and sessions court of Muzaffargarh. Five attackers continued to stab the prisoner until they were certain of his death. Two policemen who tried to overpower the attackers were also injured. Bystanders with the help of policemen had held two of the attackers and handed them over to police.

Gopang and Maani were contractors of toll tax in Jatoi. Rasheed, in charge of a seminary, filed a case of blasphemy against Gopang and Maani on March 13, 2006.

BAR: Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) lawyers won the district bar association elections on Monday. PPP district general secretary Zubaidul Islam Khan Sherwani was elected president, Iftikhar Qureshi general secretary and Khurram Javed Bhutta vice president.
