Baker’s Gal wins in style

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 14: Fancied bay mare, Baker's Gal, won in style the Tandlianwala Sugar Mill Cup run over 1200 metres during the 20th Lahore Winter Meeting on a chilly day at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Haji Fazal Hadi trained mare, Baker's Gal gave jockey A. Imran an arm-chair ride, who sat still just guiding her on the right course to beat Harry Can View by a distance unchallenged.

Chestnut horse Zargar, who was backed for place ran disappointingly and finished a bad fourth.

The winner clocked one minute 13 seconds over the distance.

Khawaja Usman's favourite colt, Byron was the most impressive winner of the day.

Ridden admirably by leading jockey Shahid Rehman, Byron was a bit slow at the start when his stable-mate Namroud, piloted by jockey Aamir Pervez went in to the lead. Half way through Shahid using hands and heels and occasional whip urged his mount Byron, who gave a prompt response.

Then a battle for supremacy ensued between the two and finally Byron emerged winner by one and a half lengths. The beauty of the race was that the first three positions were won by the same connections.

This is rare phenomenon that all horses belonging to same connections were on job Byron's victory gave Shahid Rehman a well-deserved double when earlier he had piloted home Fruity in the second race.

Fancied bay colt, Kiss Of Luck took his winning streak to three in a row to complete his hat-trick of wins on Sunday. She beat chestnut filly Chill by five lengths. This filly from Francisco Guardi out of Mohany was ridden perfectly by the riding boy Atif Javed.

The punters who had a good deal of drubbing on the previous race days had a profitable Sunday when five favourites and two long shots won in a card of seven events. Queen Of Music, Fruity, Kiss Of Luck, Byron and Baker's Gal were the favourites to win while Baker's Shine and Dream Comes True were available at three to one each.
