By Our Correspondent

LAHORE, Jan 14: Vice-chancellors of the universities in Punjab will attend a meeting on Monday (today) to discuss the development of new curricula recommended by a white paper issued by the federal government.

This is the second high-level moot of teachers, educationists and scholars Governor Khalid Maqbool has called to further the new education policy.

The white paper on education recommends that new curricula should introduce more subjects on engineering and technology and computer-related learning and the Higher Education Commission be tasked with designing syllabi to cater industrial and social needs and working for the development of faculty.

The white paper primarily recommends modern pedagogical methods and universal, free and compulsory education to all youngsters.

The paramount idea of the white paper is that education is right of all Pakistanis and is a major obligation of the state under the 1973 Constitution.

The paper also focuses on the need to strengthen education in the public sector, particularly at higher and secondary levels and urges the private sector to introduce uniform courses that synchronise with the public schools, colleges and universities.

The education policy also emphasises the need for education in various disciplines of art and culture with special emphasis on performing arts. Education for special youngsters is also part of the policy.

The governor chaired a meeting of the project directors of public universities on Saturday wherein the directors apprised him of the changes in syllabi and the introduction of new courses which they have decided in line with the new government policy on education.
