Three die in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Two Islamic militants and a civilian were killed on Saturday in a gunbattle in occupied Kashmir, police said, as rebels staged grenade attacks in Srinagar. The three were killed in the village of Sumblar, near Bandipora town, 60 kilometres north of Srinagar.

“The area was sealed on information that militants were hiding there. As troops marched towards a house, militants opened fire that was returned,” police officer Imtiaz Ahmed said.

He said a civilian trapped in the crossfire was also killed.

Meanwhile, seven people, including two policemen, were injured in two separate grenade attacks in Srinagar, a police spokesman said.

He said unidentified militants targeted police patrols with hand grenades in the city's Boulevard and Kamarwadi districts and fled.—AFP
