Baker’s Gal ready to make amends today

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 13: A seven-event card comprising big fields has been chalked out for the Lahore Winter Meeting to be held at the Racecourse on Sunday. In all, 81 runners have accepted to run in the seven races, four to be gone over the sprinting distance of 1100m and three over 1200m.. The first race will be held at 11.30pm.

The feature event, the Kotri Plate class IV division I handicap race to be contested over 1200 metres has a small field of five runners barring last-minute withdrawals.

A very good sprinter, but beaten twice to second place, Baker's Gal seems poised to make amends and win on the third attempt. The rest should fight for the second place. This will be the sixth race in racing order.

Of a dozen acceptors for the supporting and fifth race, the Kotri Plate Class IV division II to be gone over 1200m.

There are four strong contenders. They are: Quince, Noor, Discovery and Byron. They should fight for the top honours. The first named colt, Quince though placed at the top weight of nine stone four pounds has an edge over others. But there is a big question mark who is the jockey to ride him? The colt has a tendency to hang inside.

The fourth race looks a match between a colt and a filly. The two in contention are bay colt Kiss Of Luck and The filly Chill. Kiss Of Luck is in good form and will be on the course to make it two in a row while Chill is not in her best.

The third race has 15 runners. On recent form and performances Royal Luck, Puma The Great, Richy Dancer look good to pick up the spoils If every thing goes his way Royal Luck should click.

Three-year-old mare, Fruity ran much below the expectations of her connections last Sunday should oblige them this by winning the second race. Her connections were so hopeful as they were heard saying she could be defeated with a gun only. But in spite of the forceful driving of jockey Shahid Rehman, she ran a hopeless second behind Paro. This is all about racing known as the game of greatest uncertainties. Perhaps while betting on horses people tend to forget this very important aspect of racing.

Mama Mia, Murad King and Armida are the next on chance in the same order

By virtue of her last Sunday's victory Paro looks set to steal the honours once again in the seventh race. With a good lad up in the saddle she should make it two in a row. The mare will have however, Simoom and Dream Comes True constant thorns in her side going over 1100 metres.
