LARKANA, Jan 13: Speakers at a seminar on Friday called for appointment of a permanent chief election commissioner to ensuring transparent general elections in the country.

The seminar on ‘democracy in Pakistan and its problems and solutions’ was organised by the National Commission for Peace and Justice.

PPP MNA Khalid Iqbal Memon was chief guest on the occasion. Samson Joseph, Dr Zulfikar Rahoojo, Prof Hafeez Kumbhar and Naresh Kumar spoke on the occasion.

They said that the election commission should ensure the maximum participation of women, discourage gender discrimination and mincing government’s interference in the polls by protecting the sanctity of right to vote.

Terming democracy inevitable for the country, they said that irrespective of the nomenclature and composition of the society democracy was a system that suited all.

They called for halting the unnecessarily suspension and amendments to the Constitution.

In a resolution, the seminar called for a political system in the country that discouraged any internal, external, religious and army interference which leads to the formation of ‘peoples rule’ and help assist in constituting a democratic government.

In another resolution the seminar opposed all kinds of terrorism and war in the world and urged the government to sign the United Nations resolutions regarding human rights and setting up human rights institutions in the country. The seminar also asked people to elect those representatives who firmly believe in serving people.

The people should also with full determination discourage the politics of rigging, they said.
