KARACHI, Jan 12: Karachi Urban squandered an excellent opportunity to pile up runs as they struggled to 189 for six against Peshawar on the opening day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Gold League match at the National Stadium here on Friday.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, the Karachi Urban batsmen committed suicide by throwing their wickets unnecessarily on a docile track after openers Asif Zakir and Khurram Manzoor had given them a fine start.
The pair put on 76 before Asif attempted an injudicious cut and saw Wajahatullah Wasti clung onto a superb one-handed catch at slip off the bowling of off-spinner Arshad Khan.
Khurram then slashed medium-pacer Riaz Afridi to Shoaib Khan in the gulley in another moment of indiscreet approach. He was day’s top-scorer with 47.
Imran Javed was one exception. The all-rounder put his head down to remain unbeaten on 40 in the unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 43 with Tahir Khan (14).
The start was delayed by 90 minutes because the adjacent pitch had been profusely watered the evening before.
