Neglected Babbu The Great wins feature event

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 10: Punters suffered heavy losses as only two favourite horses came up to expectations in a card of six events during midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

The punters’ misery started right from the opener when chestnut Goldie upset all calculations to win the event.

He beat Stumpy, another long shot, by four lengths. Odds-on favourite bay horse Gypsy finished third, three lengths further behind.

Chestnut horse, Wah Cisco Wah, at even money favourite won the second race to give some respite to the losers.

He beat second favourite Love Minister by three-fourth of a length in a closely contested race.

Then again, another neglected gelding, Malang Aya, won the third race defeating half-money favourite, Rana Choice by short head in a photo finish.

In the fourth race, two to one roan gelding, Billoo The Great, beat 80 to 100 favourite bay filly, Mama Mia by a length.

Mama Mia was at one time clearly leading the front bunch of runners but she hung thrice towards outside, thus losing a considerable ground. Riding boy Khalil Vicky struggled to control her but the filly lost stamina and was beaten.

Joint favourite bay colt Lucky Short II, rode by A. Alam, won the fifth race defeating long shot Chuey Muey by three-fourth of a length.

Lucky Short II was running at third position in the final 200metres post. But he showed a marvelous turn of foot to the urging of riding boy A. Alam and came rushing from far behind to dislodge front runner Chuey Muey. Filly Jago finished third.

The feature and the last event turned out to be a disaster too for the punters when a totally neglected horse Babbu The Great sprang a big surprise winning from Daisy Against All by over four lengths.

Favourite Desert Queen finished third with Blue Fire at fourth place.

Owned by Khadim Maseeh, Babbu The Great clocked one minute 4 1/5 seconds on the muddy track.
