KARACHI, Jan 10: Milk prices registered a considerable decline in various parts of the city on Wednesday. According to a survey conducted by Online, milk is being sold at Rs30 to Rs32 per litre as against Rs34 per litre in the PECHS, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Shah Faisal Colony and Malir.

However, the price per litre in Defence, Clifton, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, and some other localities, is still Rs34.

The President of Retail Milk Association, Hafiz Nisar Gaddi, said retailers had agreed to sell milk at Rs30 for only 10 days following their commitment with the city nazim last Friday.

Although the retailers were facing loss of Rs2 per litre as the dairy farmers and wholesalers had refused to decrease milk prices, the retailers could bear this loss for 10 days only, he added.

Nisar Gaddi said though the official rate of milk was Rs28 per litre but they were compelled to sell milk at Rs30 per lit as the dairy farmers and wholesalers were selling milk to the retailers at previous rates of Rs31.09 and Rs31.89 per lit respectively.

The revenue department meanwhile continued its campaign against profiteers on Wednesday. To date 125 milk sellers have been jailed and 270 retailers have been fined, a city government official said.

He said the city government had fixed wholesale rates at Rs26 per litre and Rs28 as retail but it was observed that both stakeholders were violating the official price list.—Online
