Senate Committee to grill POA over Asiad debacle

By Amir Wasim

ISLAMABAD, Jan 9: Four members of the Senate Standing Committee on Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs on Tuesday submitted a notice to requisition the meeting to discuss the shameful performance of the Pakistani athletes in the recently-concluded Asian Games in Doha.

Through the notice, four senators from both government and opposition benches have asked the chairman of the committee to convene the meeting to discuss the working of the Pakistan Olympic Association in the wake of country’s worst ever showing in the high-profile event where the national athletes ended up with just four medals.

The meeting has been requisitioned by Senator Enver Baig of the People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP), Senator Abdur Rahim Mandokhel of Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), Senator Fauzia Fakharuz Zaman and Senator Rehana Yahya Baloch of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML).

The notice has been filed under Rule 163(4) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate 1988 and the chairman of the committee, Chaudhry Zaffar Iqbal, is bound to summon the meeting within 14 days.

Earlier, the committee’s scheduled meeting on January 12 could not be held due to the non-availability of the POA president, Lt-Gen (retd) Arif Hassan.
