Terrorist top notch for Horse of the Year Cup

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, Jan 6: Five-year-old chestnut Terrorist is fancied to lift the Horse of the Year Cup when the first Gymkhana race meeting of 2007 takes place at Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Having good handicap advantage he is on course for a double hat-trick and seems to finish ahead of the nine opponents barring last minute withdrawal in the six furlongs eighth race restricted to thoroughbred Pakistani horses of four years and upwards. It is also feature event of the day.

Terrorist stable mate filly Abhi Abhi and bay colt The Arab should battle it out for the places.

A card of nine races has been drawn for the day. The first race begins at 12.00noon.

If all goes well, five-year-old chestnut mare Butter Fly should make amends by sprinting to victory in the next race. She has failed to come up to the mark in the last couple of meetings.

She is likely to get a tough opposition from mare Voo Doo Doll and colt Awan.

Bay colt Laat Sahib is also in contention and can deliver the goods if backed by the connections. He was beaten by The Conqueror’s in his last run.

In a similar situation, Tharkyee and Al Zarrar from the stables of Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara will vie for honours in the Eid Milan Cup. We prefer the former to return with flying colours. Another form horse six-year-old mare Sonu Love Mani is in line for a place. Dragon Heart had won the Eid Milan Cup last year.

Four-year-old dark bay colt, Air Supply, is poised to make it two-in-a-row should he land the New Year Cup.

His likely challengers are Lucky Friend and Champion Express.

Saddled by Mansoor Alam, bay horse New Ferrari is preferred to pick up spoils in a field of 18 contestants. Filly Make Millions and mare Juliat are likely to pose immediate threat.

After a long layoff 10-year-old dark bay horse Chand Aya is on chance to claim a long overdue victory in the division IV class VII. He should be chased by Daruwala and Silent Love.

With four successive second positions under his belt, three-year-old bay colt, Sir Jee, is favourite to start the year on winning note by grabbing the opener.

Mida’s Touch and Vice Admiral should fight it out for places.

Mares Roop Ki Rani and Royal Beauty are on chance to pick up the remaining two races.

One hopes that after the last week incident, the KRC Racing Committee should restore the confidence of race goers by allowing the horses to run on merit and give severe punishments to the riders who violate it.
