KARACHI: Constant price hike deplored

KARACHI, Jan 6: Chairman of the JUP’s Supreme Council Prof Syed Shah Faridul Haq on Saturday condemned the constantly rising prices of eatables, especially milk and bread, in Karachi.

In a statement, he said that coupled with poverty and unemployment, the price hike had been depriving masses of their right to live and forcing them to commit suicide.

Prof Shah said those making claims of developing the city were backing the illegal raise of Rs4 per litre in milk price and Re1 in bread price. “There is no check on profiteering and hoarding in this mega city,” he added.

He deplored that extortionists were collecting ‘Bhatta’ from small and big commercial units, factories and mills in broad daylight.

Due to mismanagement on the part of city government and traffic police, the city is faced with the chronic problem of traffic jams. He also slammed that most of the city roads and streets had been left dug up in name of development.

Referring to the ladies-gents joint marathon race and the Basant festival, the JUP leader remarked that the rulers were busy promoting a culture of vulgarity and obscenity while masses were starving and committing suicide.

“They are promoting the Western values and traditions that even the West itself has done away with,” he wondered.

Meanwhile, the Pasban Pakistan on Saturday said that the overnight rise in prices of eatables and petroleum products, as well as the alarming law and order situation, showed that administration did not exist at federal, provincial and city level to resolve people’s problems.

The organisation’s General Secretary Usman Moazzam and city chief Syed Ashraf Hussain told a meeting at the Pasban Helpline Secretariat that the government at all levels was doing nothing to bring the situation under control.

They said that the recent hike in prices of essential commodities, like dairy and petroleum products has badly affected common man. The meeting resolved to intensify the struggle against social injustice and inflation.—PPI
