WASHINGTON, Jan 4: In an unexpected move, the US intelligence chief John Negroponte is leaving his post to move to the State Department. He will take up position as deputy secretary of state and is expected to play a vital role in the Bush administration’s efforts to reshape its Iraq policy. The post of the director of national intelligence was created after the Sept 11, 2001, attacks to unite all intelligence gathering agencies under one umbrella. Mr Negroponte was supposed to help restore the credibility of intelligence organisations.
