PPP leader seeks judges’ accountability

By A Reporter

RAWALPINDI, Jan 4: Strict accountability of judiciary should be carried out for early dispensation of justice and for this purpose the Supreme Judicial Council be strengthened and selection of judges be made transparent, said PPP Senator Dr Babar Awan here on Thursday.

He was speaking at a press conference at the Rawalpindi Press Club where District Bar Association secretary Khwaja Javed Iqbal announced to join the PPP along with his colleagues nine days before the bar election.

Dr Awan said the government had failed to improve the judicial system. He said the prime minister had also failed to fulfil his pledge to establish a high court in the federal capital.

He said the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had given 350 million dollars under the Access to Justice Programme and the government contributed 25 million dollars to the funds.

However, no improvement has been seen in the judiciary and the government should make public the outcome of the project, he added.

Negating the claims of the federal information minister and minister for parliamentary affairs about a possible deal between the PPP and the government, he said his party never provided cushion to dictators and would not support dictatorship in future.
