Nasir, Mushtaq win awards

KARACHI, Dec 31: The year long rivalry between experienced jockeys M. Nasir and Mohammad Essa for the ‘Champion Rider of the Year’ award came to end on Saturday at the end of last Gymkhana race meeting of 2006 at the Karachi Racecourse.

Nasir credited himself with 64 wins to dethrone defending champion Essa for the top slot. The latter narrowly lagged behind by registering 61 wins.

Surprisingly, none of them could win any race in the last meeting thus ending the year on sour note.

Veteran trainer Mushtaq Ali Khan won the ‘Best Trainer of the Year’ award when he saddled 41 winners. His closest rival Sher Mohammad finished second when his 36 trained horses won the races.—AZ
