ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: Pakistan has said it is feared that former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s execution by hanging on Saturday morning will exacerbate the security situation in the violence-torn country.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam expressed the hope that “the unfortunate event” would not affect the process of restoration of peace and normality to Iraq, according to the Online news agency.

“The execution of former president Saddam Hussein, which can only be described as a sad event, is another reminder of the violence that continues to grip Iraq. It remains our earnest hope to see peace, stability and reconciliation so that the people of Iraq regain control of their affairs in a secure environment.”

Expressing grief over Mr Hussein’s execution, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said the people Iraq should be allowed to decide their country’s future.

Speaking to newsmen at the Prime Minister secretariat, he said Pakistan wanted peace, prosperity and development to return to Iraq.

PML president said the choice of the day of Eidul Azha for the ex-dictator’s execution was tragic, according to Dawn’s Ahmed Hassan.

He said Saddam’s hanging – and that too on the day of Eidul Azha – would cause a further breakdown in law and order in Iraq.
