KARACHI: ATC seeks medical report of Akhtar Mengal
KARACHI, Dec 30: An Anti-Terrorism Court here on Saturday directed the superintendent of jails to submit the medical report of Balochistan National Party (Mengal) chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal on January 5, 2007 after his complete medical check-up by doctors.
The direction came on an application seeking medical treatment of Akhtar Mengal, a former chief minister of Balochistan, who is facing trial before the ATC for his alleged involvement in the army personnel hostage-taking case.
His counsel Wazeer Hussain Khoso submitted that the applicant was a patient of hepatitis, cervical problem, ulcer, kidney pain, brain clot and high cholesterol and his family was willing to treat him at a private hospital at its own expenses, praying the court to permit his medical treatment by private doctors.
He further submitted that Akhtar Mengal was incarcerated in solitary confinement and in inhuman conditions and no one was allowed to meet him.
He sought permission for allowing family members of Akhtar Mengal to meet him.
ATC Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti, who is acting as link-judge for the ATC-V, directed the jail superintendent to submit the medical report on January 5 and allowed an uncle of Akhtar Mengal and his lawyer to meet him in prison.—PPI
