DRUGS-FREE: Balochistan will be declared a drugs-free province by 2007.
This was decided in a meeting presided over by Chief Secretary K.B. Rind.
Officials decided that poppy cultivation would be discouraged in the province and strict action would be taken against people involved in poppy growing.
However, participants of the meeting observed that because of strict measures taken by the government, poppy cultivation had been reduced while a huge quantity of poppy had been destroyed during the drive launched by the ANF with the help of the Frontier Corps and other authorities concerned.
The district coordination officers (DCOs) of various districts who attended that meeting were told to collect information about poppy cultivation in their respective areas and inform ANF and other authorities for launching a similar drive in Karachi.
The Regional Director of ANF Balochistan Brig Anwarul Haq briefed the meeting about the ANF campaigns during the past three years and said that they had been ‘very successful’, adding that the ANF had destroyed poppy crop cultivated over several thousands of acres.
