Zubair scores upset win on first day


PESHAWAR, Dec 27: The NWFP pugilists got off to a flying start as upcoming Mohammad Zubair of NWFP-A recorded an upsetting win over PAF’s Mohammad Bashir on the opening day of the third All-Pakistan Boxing Tournament here at the PSB Gymnasium on Wednesday.

Mohammad Zubair, in the 51kg flyweight bout, displayed his right-left combination nicely from the very beginning of the first quarter-final against Mohammad Bashir. Zubair stormed into the semi-final by beating Bashir 37-17.

Zubair’s win was followed by PAF’s Mohammad Anwar, who defeated Punjab’s Usman 17-16 in the 60kg lightweight category.

In the 64kg lightweight category, the bout between Lala Shah of Balochistan and Sajjad Ali Qambrani of the KESC proved to be a one-sided affair, won by Sajjad Ali 20-7.

In the 69kg welterweight fight, Javed Jan of the KESC claimed victory in the first round against Obaidullah of NWFP-A. In the first round the referee called it RSC (Referee Stop Contest) in favour of Javed who got five points. Teams from Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, NWFP-A, NWFP-B, PAF and KESC are participating in the tournament. —APP
