KARACHI, Dec 27: Despite repeated commitments by the successive governments and administrations, a major portion of Orangi Town has been without water supply for a long time and residents have to meet their needs through tankers.
Water has been supplied to some upper areas like L-Block, Chishti Nagar, Raees Amrohvi Colony, Gulshan-i-Behar and adjacent localities, but people living along the hillocks cannot get it due to its low pressure. They have to draw it through their own pumps.
Complaining that the supply is not regular, residents told Dawn that water was supplied once or twice a week only for an hour, which could not meet their needs.
It may be mentioned here that a waterline had been laid about eight years ago in all the areas of Toori Bangash Colony, Raja Tanveer Colony and other localities which fall in the jurisdiction of Orangi Town, but the water is yet to be released into it.
Owing to the negligence of the officials concerned, the fixtures have also been taken away by thieves. The local people have formed committees, which have demanded that the town nazim take notice of their problems and remove their grievances.
A resident of Raja Tanveer Colony, Abdul Mutalib, who is also chairman of the committee, said that people had been struggling for water supply for the last 20 years, but to no avail.
He said it was a long-standing demand of the residents and said the government was morally bound to solve the problem, particularly with the commissioning of the K3 project.
