KARACHI: Musharraf’s removal before polls stressed

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 26: The assurances of the Europe Union and the US government about free elections cannot be relied upon as the aim of holding elections by General Pervez Musharraf is only to prolong his rule.

Therefore, the removal of his government has become inevitable for ushering in true representative institutions through fair and transparent polls in the country.

This was stated by chief of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Qazi Hussain Ahmad while speaking at an Ulema conference held at Idara Noor-i-Haq on Tuesday. About a dozen religious scholars also spoke at the moot.

He claimed that the government instead of serving national interests was pursuing policies that protected only American interests. He said the rulers’ alliance with the US had put the country’s sovereignty at stake.

The MMA chief said the price spiral, unemployment, lawlessness and obscenity had pushed the country to the brink of disaster. He said the entire national wealth was accumulated with a few peculiar families.

“Every general is a billionaire and members of the ruling clique are involved in all sorts of scandals from sugar price-hike to stock exchange.”

He called upon the ulema to unite and prepare the nation to put up resistance to the government’s anti-Islam measures, and effect a big change in the country. He said the unity of ulema of different schools of thought on one platform had unnerved the anti-Islam forces.

He said the Western civilisation had begun a war against the Islamic civilisation. “The new world order is a part of this war in which Islamic and Chinese civilisations are declared as a threat to the Western civilisation,” he said and added that until the nation got rid of the present rulers, the Western invasion could not be halted. He said a plan was being hatched to impose Western laws and cultures on this country.

Mr Ahmed referred on the ongoing war in Iraq and said the US was pursuing a policy aimed at splitting Iraq into three states.

Referring to the situation in Waziristan, the Qazi, who is also chief of the Jamaat-i-Islami, said the rulers had no courage to speak against the bombing by the US of a seminary and mosque in Bajaur and instead owned it as the Pakistan army’s action. He said pitting the army against religious institution was a despicable act and part of US agenda.

Earlier, speaking at a workers meeting, the JI chief said General Pervez Musharraf had launched his political campaign and as such transparent elections were not possible in his presence and reiterated that they would not participate in the elections held under his supervision.

Maulana Tanveerul Haq Thanvi said that time had come to launch a movement against the government to Pakistan of US influence. Prof Hafiz Sulfi said the ulema should unite against the Women protection Act. Mufti Usmanyar Khan said the government was taking steps to eliminate Islamic identity. Asadaullah Bhutto said the ulema had to unite to meet the challenge of secularism.

Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui , Muhammad Siddique Rathore , Mufti Yusuf Qasuri and Maulana Abdul Rauf and Allama Nazir Abbas Taqvi said that with the resignation from the assemblies a movement would be launched against the government. They said that the two nation theory and the religion were being eliminated in the name of enlightenment.
