55 captives freed from central jail

GUJRANWALA, Dec 21: As many as 55 prisoners involved in minor cases were released by the district and sessions judge during his visit here on Thursday.

Reports said D&SJ Mazhar Husain visited the central jail and got prepared a list of captives involved in minor cases and ordered their release.

He checked barracks, jail kitchen and hospital and reviewed facilities being provided to inmates.

Judicial magistrate Abdul Ghafoor, jail superintendent Mian Shaukat Ali and other senior officers accompanied him.

DBA POLLS: Over 36 candidates filed their nomination papers here on Thursday for the annual elections of district bar association scheduled to be held on Jan 13.

Bar president Ilyas Rehan, Muhammad Anwer Narro and Rana Ghulam Mustafa are aspirants for the president slot, Javed Mukhtar Mirza and Ijaz Nazir Sheikh for senior vice-president, Afzal and Khalid Latif for vice-president, Chaudhry Amir Munir Bagri and Sarfraz Ahmad Butt for secretary-general, Ahmad Wasim Anjum and Muhammad Kashif for joint secretary, Zeshan Elahi and Munawwar Husain for finance secretary, Sardar Ghulam Baqir Dogar and Anjum Batool Khanam for auditor. The latter is the only woman candidate contesting DBA polls.

As many as 19 hopefuls have filed their nomination papers for the executive council.
