KARACHI: Korean firms to help develop city: Kamal

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 21: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has said the strategy adopted for developing Seoul and Incheon would be followed to modernise Karachi in transport management, infrastructure, e-government, master plan, trade and commerce and other sectors.

Talking to newsmen at Karachi airport on his return from South Korea on Thursday, he said: “My visit has paved the way for the transfer of Korean technology to Pakistan for development of Karachi,” adding that Hyundai and Daewoo had agreed to establish their manufacturing plants here.”

He said he had extended an invitation to the mayor of Incheon to visit Karachi and he accepted the same.

Mr Kamal informed newsmen that during his visit, he held meetings with mayors of Seoul and Incheon, besides presidents of Daewoo, Hyundai and other multinational concerns and senior government officials. The meetings were productive,” he added.

The city nazim, referring to his talks there, stated that some new additions would be made to the Karachi Master Plan to incorporate certain important parts of the Seoul Master Plan.

About parleys with heads and executives of Daewoo, Hyundai and other companies, he said: “They were ready to transfer technology and establish vehicle manufacturing plants in Karachi. This will help meet the requirement of public transport in Karachi and enable Pakistan to export the vehicles to neighboring Central Asian states.”

Meanwhile, in a statement issued here on Thursday, the city nazim criticised sponsors of the Friday strike, and said the call had been given by the elements who could not digest the rapid development of the city.
