US wants to topple Hamas govt: Haniyeh

GAZA, Dec 19: Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas accused the United States on Tuesday of spearheading efforts to bring down his democratically-elected government.

“There is an undeclared decision to bring down the government... and the Americans are leading this effort,” Mr Haniyeh said in a speech broadcast live on television.

Fighting between Hamas and President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction has intensified after Abbas called for fresh elections. Hamas, which took control of the Palestinian government in March after winning parliamentary polls, has vowed to boycott any new voting.—Reuters
