Power failure in Karachi

Published December 20, 2006

KARACHI, Dec 19: A large number of people living in Malir, Shah Faisal, Model Colony and areas around the airport and along Sharae Faisal had to suffer owing to a power breakdown on Tuesday evening.

Talking to Dawn, KESC operations director Adnan Bashir Khan said that the supply and demand position of electricity in the city was under control, adding that around 1,700mw power was available to meet the demand of between 1,650 and 1,700mw.

However, due to a slight rise in mercury on the scale, the electricity demand suddenly increased and touched the mark of 1,800mw on Tuesday evening, causing tripping of a grid station in Malir, Mr Bashir added.

He said that it usually took around one hour to cool down the system, adding that the power supply to the affected areas was restored by 10pm.
