3 sugar mills fire boilers

By Our Correspondent

MIRPURKHAS, Dec 16: Three out of the five sugar mills in the district lit boilers and started receiving sugarcane from growers on Saturday.

The remaining Tharparkar and Najma sugar mills also started issuing procurement slips (indents) to growers.

Following the decision to resume sugarcane crushing from December 15 made at a meeting of the mill owners and growers’ leaders, boilers of the Mirpurkhas, Al-Abbas and Digri sugar mills have been lit.

Deputy general manager, Mirpurkhas Sugar Mill, Abdul Ghaffar, told Dawn that crushing at the mills would start by Saturday night as required quantity of sugarcane had arrived at the mills.

They would purchase sugarcane at government-fixed rate of Rs67 per 40kg, he said and added that they could not pay more than that price because of losses they had suffered.
