KARACHI: PPP not to take ‘solo flight’ to power corridors

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 16: Chief of the Pakistan People’s Party-Parliamentarians Makhdoom Amin Fahim has said that his party would not take ‘solo flight’ for coming into power and if any proposal in this regard was mooted out, then the entire opposition would be taken into confidence before taking any decision.

He was responding to newsmen’s question at the end of the PPP seminar on water issue at the People’s Secretariat on Saturday. He reiterated his belief that elections alone could lead to the restoration of democracy but emphasized that if the opposition’s demands with regard to the formation of a government of national consensus, suspension of the system headed by nazims and formation of an independent election commission with assurances of transparent, free and fair elections were not met, then the other options would be considered.

Responding to questions from the newsmen who had sought clarification of his reported statement that the PPP would go into elections even if they were held under General Musharraf, he said that only that portion was highlighted which was about contesting elections but the conditions for that were not given that prominence, hence the confusion and bickering.

Asked how he would justify this stand as the ARD and PPP had earlier declared that they did not expect free, fair and transparent elections under the Musharraf dispensation, Makhdoom Amin Fahim said that the PPP would not do anything that was against Pakistan’s interest, and added that whatever may be the future course, the opposition parties would discuss among themselves.

He nevertheless pointed out that in 2002 also, political forces opposed to Musharraf had participated in the elections because they never wanted to leave the field open for self-seekers.
