‘Decision on SPSC chief after CJ’s report’

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Dec 15: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad said on Friday he would take a decision about the chairman of the Sindh Public Service Commission after receiving a report from the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court on the issue.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the convocation of University of Sindh in Jamshoro, he said he had studied a summary on the termination of SPSC chairman’s services and had requested the chief justice to hold an inquiry into alleged malpractices in the commission’s affairs.

He remarked: “Our institutions should be strong and their prestige must be restored.” The summary sent to him by the chief minister did not explicitly mention terminating the services of the commission chairman, he said.

Asked if the chief minister had taken him into confidence before issuing statements about the commission, he said he was out of the country at the time and came to know about the issue upon his return.

Referring to a Sindh High Court decision on lifting the ban on teachers’ associations, he said the decision spoke volumes about the independence of judiciary. He said that he did not know about reports that the Sindh government was filing an appeal at the Supreme Court against the SHC decision.

About a controversy between federal and Sindh governments over the sale of Sindh’s islands, the governor said the government would welcome foreign investment in the province and provide them with an environment conducive for work. He said the federation and Sindh both had claims on the islands but hoped that the matter would be resolved amicably. He said he had always supported the people of Sindh and would represent Sindh’s case before the federation.

Earlier on Thursday, the Sindh governor had directed the chief secretary to hold an inquiry into the allegations of irregularities in the SPSC affairs.
