KARACHI: Teachers body welcomes lifting of ban

KARACHI, Dec 13: The Karachi University Teachers Society on Wednesday welcomed the Sindh High Court's decision in which it declared the ban on teachers associations and unions as “unlawful”. KUTS felicitated the teachers community on this “historic victory”.

In a statement issued here, KUTS President Prof Dr Sohail Barkati and Secretary Sarwar Nasim said the ban on teachers’ activities for their rights was an “autocratic step” by the Sindh education department and the same was endorsed by the high court in its verdict.

They said teachers always resisted autocratic, dictatorial and anti-constitution steps by the governments and they would continue doing so in addition to their professional responsibilities.

Forming unions and associations was a democratic right of the teachers' community, they said and advised teachers to continue their duties for the promotion of education and literacy.
