12 killed in Afghanistan

HERAT, Dec 11: US-led troops and warplanes attacked a Taliban hideout in western Afghanistan, killing at least nine rebel fighters including a regional commander, police said Monday.

Police also killed three Taliban fighters after the insurgents stormed their checkpost in the south of the volatile country, a police commander said.

Coalition troops, acting on intelligence reports, launched the operation in the Balabuluk district of western Farah province Sunday night, police said. “We knew for a while that these Taliban had entered this district with an evil aim to sabotage the highway” linking the western city of Herat to Helmand, police said.—AFP
