KARACHI: KIHD to be made most modern hospital, says nazim

KARACHI, Dec 10: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has vowed to make the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) one of the country’s most modern healthcare centres, and announced that the span of time for the construction work in the phase-II of the project has been reduced from three to two years.
He was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the phase-II here on Sunday. He also announced that latest machinery worth Rs120 million for the hospital would be procured with the federal government’s support. The Phase-I of the hospital was inaugurated in August this year.
In the phase-II of the KIHD envisages 250-bed ward equipped with the facilities of angiography, angioplasty and open-heart surgery. The ground floor of the building’s phase-II would be have OPD facilities whereas the first floor will have OT Complex and laboratory. The second and third floor will have general private wards, respectively, and the fourth floor will have some more private wards and an administration block.
The nazim recalled that when he took charge of his office last year, the KIHD had only one doctor and it had been functioning till midnight. He said he procured machinery worth millions of rupees for the hospital and got the angiography and angioplasty started before the hospital’s formal inauguration.
On Saturday, he said, he got approval from Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for the procurement of multi-slice CT-angio machinery worth Rs120 million for the KIHD which is available at only four hospitals of the country.
He said the city government had relieved some 50 doctors and paramedics from their service for failing to perform their duties efficiently. He made it clear that he would not tolerate negligence by the staff at any hospital in the city. He said doctors and paramedics at the KIHD were being paid more than those serving in the private sector hospitals.
The city nazim said that improvement in the health care services was his top priority, adding that he wanted best healthcare facilities to all citizens, particularly those who could not afford exorbitant charges at private hospitals.
Chairman of the Health Committee Dr Waqar Kazmi, speaking on the occasion, said that the KIHD, ever since its establishment, started its regular services, besides the emergency and CCU services.
The EDO Health briefed the audience about the project. Executive Director of the KIHD Dr Abdul Samad thanked the city nazim and other distinguished guests for gracing the occasion.
The ceremony was also attended by former chief justice of the Sindh High Court Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, besides other prominent citizens.
