GUJRANWALA, Dec 8: Over 15 prisoners were injured in a clash when a group of captives poured chili in the eyes of their rival group members that followed free for all in the district courts lock-up here on Friday.

Reports said that captives — the Imran alias Kashif group and the Shakeel alias Billa group — had fallen out in jail barracks over maintaining their dominance some 10 days ago. But the jail authority had averted any major clash between the two rival groups.

On Friday, locked them together, members of both the groups were escorted to the district courts for hearing. Seizing an opportunity, Imran and his men after a quarrel threw chili in the eyes of their rival group members.

They sustained injuries when both the groups later attacked each other with handcuffs and blades.

Receiving information, the SP (headquarters) and the Civil Lines SHO along with a heavy police contingent rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

After the first aid, Imran alias Kashif and his men were shifted to Civil Lines police station while their rivals to the Model Town police station.

Police have registered a case against all the accused under the terrorism act.

DOUBLED: The number of deputy public prosecutors in Gujranwala will be doubled from the present half-a-dozen while some 32 assistant public prosecutors will be deployed in place of legal inspector for pursuing criminal cases in courts under the new public prosecution system.

Talking to Dawn here on Friday, district public prosecutor Sheikh Ehsanul Haq said the number of courts of sessions judges and additional sessions judges were 12.

He pointed out that a deputy public prosecutor or an assistant public prosecutor would pursue cases in each court. The government had completed the interview process and a notification in this regard could be issued shortly.

He said the recommendations for the appointment of 88 junior clerks, naib qasids and others had been forwarded to the prosecutor general.
